Courtenay Sport Performance Brake Pads.

After extensive product testing and in depth discussion with the manufacturers, Courtenay Sport are pleased to supply a range of uprated fast road brake pads from EBC, for the most popular applications to accompany our range of performance discs and the EBC grooved and dimpled discs.

In far too many instances we have seen green stuff pads incorrectly specified in high powered cars e.g. Astra Turbo, as an upgrade pad but which are evidently not up to the job of stopping a 200 + bhp car. These pads work as an acceptable replacement  on lower powered or light cars but as a fast road uprated pad they are not a good choice for the vast majority of applications, which is why we choose not to supply this pad. For this reason you will not find us recommending them or fitting them to inappropriate applications.

We are happy to supply an OE or OEM pad for normal road use, through EBC pads to out and out track pads.

EBC Ceramic Pads

Red Ceramic Logo Having looked at the various applications involved, it has become clear to us from in-house testing that red ceramic and yellow ceramic pads and good choices for fast road and track day use and offer a big improvement in brake performance when used under extreme application, yet still offer a good pedal feel when cold.

Red ceramic pads are an ideal fast road pad which comfortably operate at temperatures around
550oC, and in tests by Lotus have remained stable up to a pad temperature of 700oC, yet for the fast road driver these temperatures will never be reached on the road.
For the more demanding driver,and those drivers who have a more track day biased use for their vehicle the yellow pads manufactured from an aramid fibre based brake compound, will offer and even better performance at higher temperatures. Offering good bite from cold, the yellow pads offer better stopping ability and operate at greater temperature ranges, offering a big improvement over standard items, especially when matched to uprated discs. Both Red ceramic and Yellow pads come with a brake in coating to the pad surface to help faster bedding in of brake components. This mild abrasive red coloured coating lightly scrubs the brake disc after new pad installation allowing optimum braking to be achieved faster. This coating is especially useful when fitted to EBC coated discs, as the brake in coating quickly and safely removes the coating from the disc surface.

Red ceramic and Yellow pads for fast road and trackday use are available for most models.

ALL Red Ceramic and Yellow Pads that we supply are road legal with R90 approval.
Blue Ceramic Logo We can also supply Blue NDX pads for race or track day use (may not be road legal). Bluestuff NDX is a high friction sport and race material that can be used for aggressive street driving and certain types of track use. The material has had much success on the track with quality aftermarket calipers (multi piston systems with better release and cooling and larger rotors) and limited success with street based calipers where pad size and caliper drag can challenge any brake material. The biggest advantage of EBC Bluestuff NDX is their bite from cold and progressive brake feel and the ability to bring a car to a complete stop.
Available for many applications including AP 4 Pot CP6600 Calipers, K-Sport 8 pot and D2 6 pot calipers.

Red and Yellow Ceramic pads are available for all popular models with OE calipers and popular aftermarket calipers.

Why Bed-In?

  • To transfer a layer of friction material onto the brake disc faces to achieve maximum performance.
  • To stabilize compressible materials to avoid a spongy pedal.
  • To boil off volatile elements in the friction compound in order to have the initial ‘green’ fading during bedding
       in and not on track.
  • To align the pad surface with the brake disc surface to have full contact.
If pads do not get bedded properly and / or used too hard right out of the box will likely lead to pad glazing. Pad glazing is a condition where the resins in the pad crystallize on both, the pad friction surface and the brake disc surface, resulting in poor stopping performance, brake judder and vibrations.

Once the initial bedding-in process has been carried out to ensure that the entire pad surface is in contact with the disc surface (which can take up to 500+ miles) and to ensure gentle heat transfer into new discs (if fitted) then further pad bedding-in can be carried out (ensure a safe environment is chosen to do this) where heat is put into the pads to bed them in properly and to eliminate the initial 'green-fade'. Once this is carried out the brake set up will be ready for optimum use.

Note: If bedding-in on new discs always heat cycle the discs correctly first before attempting to bed-in new pads.

Pagid Brake Pads

Pagid offer a range of high performance pads to suit any requirement. Pagid race compounds are a complex formulation of very high ceramic material content giving superior thermal insulation and higher heat resistance. Medium average friction, consistent instop behaviour with good pedal feed back, favourable release characteristics reducing drag, good disc life, low heat conductivity.
RS29 is a recent development from the bases of RS19, with a very similar friction coefficient to RS19 with improvements in initial bite offering quicker response and is slightly more temperature stable at the upper levels of the temperature range. Developments in raw material selection and compounding have resulted in improvements also in pedal feel and feedback, helping with modulation particularly on lighter applications. This material provides very good levels of performance and response at all temperature levels, only slight temperature inputs are required to bring the pad up to its optimum performance level.
RS29 is used at the highest levels of endurance, short distance and sprint racing so is designed to offer consistent braking and high levels of control over a long period of time. RS29 is also proven to be an excellent all round track day pad. Good levels of performance at all temperatures, including cold, only slight temperature inputs are required to bring the pad up to its optimum performance level, with very good life and low disc wear. It gives off non corrosive dust that is easily removed from wheels, unlike some other manufacturers products that leave welded on particles behind.

As performance and brake feel are very subjective and not everyone likes the same characteristics under braking, more aggressive pads are available for customers requiring more brake performance of higher temperature stability such as RS14 and RS15, or RS4-2 for predominantly road use with occasional track work.

Always look beyond the initial purchase price and make an accurate comparison with other competitors products to find the most cost effective braking solution. When compared to cheaper pads that wear more quickly and reduce disc life, and may also not perform consistently to the same level, the initially more costly product can often work out to be cheaper when calculated over the entire season.

Mintex M1144 & M1155 Pads for VX220 and M1144 Pads for Astra/Zafira VXR

Not only do they work well with standard discs but will dramatically improves the car's stopping ability when used in conjucntion with our uprated discs. Two friction material pads are available. 1144 for fast road use and 1155 for competition use. The 1155's feature a harder friction material than the 1144's for a bigger improvement. The 1155's remain more stable at higher operating temperatures and are designed for competition use. We have however found that due to the VX220's weight the 1155 pads are suitable for fast road and track day use.

M1144 is the material for fast road use as well as light competition. It is a low metallic conventional resin-bonded metrial in which steel and acrylic fibres are used in place of asbestos. One of the main characteristics of this material is the ability to work from cold, which gives the user the confidence of a standard material on the first application of the brakes. The benefit of M1144 is experienced as the temperature within the brakes starts to increase. M1144 will remain stable and consistent through to 450c where a standard material at this temperature will most certainly start to fade. The bedding in procedure for M1144 is the same as any standard material i.e. steady braking for the first 200 miles, avoiding emergency stops. Once full pad to disc coverage is achieved, the suggested prcodure is 2-3 light applications from 30mph down to 0mph, then 3-4 steady applications from 70mph down to 30mph then leave to cool for as long as possible and they will work from cold.
M1155 is purely designed for competition use. Applications such as Group A and N rally cars and circuit saloons best suit this material. M1155 has a similar friction level to M1144 but remains consistent to a maximum operating temperature of 550-600c. Like M1144 there are no special bedding in procedures for M1155.
Bedding-In Mintex 'M' Pads - M1155/M1166/M1177

1. Ensure discs are clean. Clean discs with brake cleaner or other solvent.
2. Apply 3 to 4 light applications of the brake from 30mph down to 0mph then for:
M1155: 8/9 steady applications 90mph down to 30mph
M1166: 9/10 steady applications 90mph down to 30mph
M1177: 9/10 steady applications 90mph down to 30mph
Now Leave to cool as long as possible and they now work from cold.

Note: If bedding-in on new discs always heat cycle the discs correctly first before attempting to bed-in new pads.

Courtenay Sport Braided Brake Hose Kits. Stainless steel braided hoses, plastic coated to resist dirt, rain, salt and fitted with high quality stainless steel unions. Improves pedal feel, eliminates ballooning caused by rubber OE hoses, improves braking performance. Fog Light Delete Brake Duct Kit - Astra VXR

Our foglight delete brake duct kit, as used on the Astra Sprint Editions, is designed to get additional cold air directly to the disc and caliper assembly. One the fog lights are removed, which gives the added advantage of weight saving a consideration for track use, the kit is installed and include semi rigid convoluted ducting with plastic finishers and 3 trumpets. 2 are bonded into the OE foglight surrounds (which can be seen painted in black flexible anti stone chip paint in our image) and one is bonded into the plastic bottom pulley cover which makes for easy removal for getting access into the cambelt area and oil filter. The ducting is then fitted and directed as required between the fog light surrounds and the brake area. They will direct additional air flow towards the brake disc and caliper to aid brake cooling.

These are especially useful for cars undertaking track days.

Racing & DOT 5.1 Brake Fluid

Delphi Lockheed Racing Brake Fluid has been formulated for racing applications where braking systems operate at high temperatures. It guards against vapour lock and maintains its viscosity and lubricity at extreme temperatures. This fluid conforms to and exceeds the current specification for DOT4 and has a typical dry boiling point of 310 o C (590 o F), which is higher than DOT5.1 fluids which typically have a dry boiling point of 260 o C.

Brake Fluid - Some Facts

Due to the fact that a brake system is not perfectly sealed moisture can be absorbed by the fluid. This in effect reduces the boiling point of the fluid and can reduce the efficiency of the brake system. Another factor of reduced braking efficiency is fluid that has got too hot and boiled, turning it into gas which leads to a 'spongy' feeling.

Brake fluids are classified to defined specifications: DOT3, DOT4, DOT5, DOT 5.1 These specifications have two reference tests:
Dry Boiling Point, the boiling point of fresh fluid
Wet Boiling Point, the boiling point once the fluid has absorbed water, representing fluid that has been in use in a vehicle.

There are two main types of brake fluid:

DOT3, DOT4, DOT 5.1 which are glycol based (Poly Alkylene Glycol - PAG) & DOT 5 which is synthetic based.
The two types of fluid are not compatible and must not be mixed in a braking system.
